Desktop Softs

UltraSearch
UltraSearch searches files on local NTFS drives and provides the results within just a few seconds. UltraSearch does not use a previously built index or background process, it achieves its speed by working directly on the Master File Table (MFT) of the NTFS partitions. You can enter a file name or a pattern like *.exe and often will see the results already while typing. Additional information like size and last change date will be shown for the listed files. Moreover, the Explorer context menu is available inside UltraSearch.

 InSight Desktop Search
InSight is a search engine that keeps track of all the files in your system and makes sure that you can access your files/folders easily and quickly. It is more than just a search engine, it's also a music jukebox, that features the ability to search for music based on information like artist, genre, album, etc. InSight can also search online and display articles from Wikipedia, and can store “Quick Launch” shortcuts of your files and  links. Insight is definitely one of the fastest search engine available for your PC. It takes only 3 minutes to index a drive with 100,000 files, including 1500 mp3 files. InSight automatically tracks all the changes of those drives which have been indexed. Results are displayed as a list which is dynamically updated, as the user types. Lastly, the indexes are automatically encrypted to ensure that the information can't be directly accessed. InSight is special as it doesn't contain any menus or configurations that must be setup in order to ensure that the searches are fast. Just index your drives and leave the rest to InSight.

Everything for Windows
"Everything" is an administrative tool that locates files and folders by filename instantly for Windows. Unlike Windows search "Everything" initially displays every file and folder on your computer (hence the name Everything"). You then type in a search filter to limit what files and folders are displayed. "Everything" only uses file and folder names and generally takes a few seconds to build it's database. A fresh install of Windows XP SP2 (about 20,000 files) will take about 1 second to index. 1,000,000 files will take about 1 minute! "Everything" does not search file contents, only file and folder names. "Everything" uses very little system resources and does monitor file system changes. Your search windows will reflect changes made to the file system.

Pretty Run (previously called dsRun) helps you with that as it searches the start menu (it can search the desktop and any other folder too) for the shortcuts or files that meet your query. You can search as you type or when you press enter. Always on top option, minimize on run. Last used icons are displayed. Found items are grouped. You can get additional info about any item and Pretty Run supports searching the web as well. You can setup your search engines by yourself.
